Love to share and here's my gift for you on my birthday. I want to share with you my favorite recipe: the one that leads towards company success. There are three main ingredients: connectivity, destination and essence. More ingredients may be used, but these three are essential. Don’t forget to add a pinch of love, as Vincent van Gogh said: ‘‘what is done in love, is done well.”

Connectivity

I believe that connectivity is fundamental to everything we do. Connectivity means the state or quality of being connected. It’s all about making a personal connection with the people in your organization. Leonardo da Vince said it a long time ago: “Realize that everything connects to everything else.” Connectivity starts with you, as a person. Or in this case me. First take an honest look in the mirror. If I complain about not being appreciated for adding value, I need to look at myself too. Did I take the necessary efforts for sincerely connecting with my fellow colleagues?

Connectivity is the main driver for reaching your strategy. Nothing will happen if the company is not integrating connectivity to it. Meaning your company strategy needs a proper cascade to each department, like HR. What is the contribution of HR to this strategy? If the HR strategy is clear, then the cascade to each team member needs to be done. If all departments do this exercise but forget to link with each other on the way, you will not get there.

If you want synergy, you need to make sure that people and departments connect.  Once you are connected as a company there is lots to gain in listening to customers and suppliers. It is the sum of all these elements that are an important ingredient for success.
 

Destination

The second ingredient to success is defining a clear destination. Having a unified view of where the company wants to go. The cross point between connectivity and destination is crucial. Each department has different destinations (or as I like to call them: 'in between destinations') to contribute to the overall existence of the company. If for example the sales and marketing department don’t link with each other, they might miss the opportunity to find together new ways to get there. There might be a questionnaire being sent out by the sales department that can be of major use to your innovation center, but only if we are aware of each others projects and if we are willing to give and take together. To arrive at the same company destination trust, sharing and willingness to work together are essential. 

Essence                                                                                                                                 

The third ingredient requires a little work and boiling down. It is all about making clear choices and we all know that is not always easy. We often want to do too much at the same time and —as we go along— get swamped by other issues, which arise. It is so important to take the time to breakdown to the essence and stick to the choices you have made. Like Porter said: “The essence of strategy is choosing what not to do.”

The above three ingredients are your basic recipe to success. Without them there is no dish. Once you have those three in place, you will find that there is enough time left to focus on what really counts: the flavor of your company. Spice things up a little, or add some zest to bring out your authentic flavor.
